Hello, lovely people, and welcome back to the potting shed!
If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that no two growing seasons are ever exactly the same. The weather keeps us guessing, the slugs are always plotting, and yet, there is nowhere I would rather be than down at the allotment with mud on my boots and a trowel in hand.
As I sit down with a hot cup of tea to open up my gardening diary for the year, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a female gardener today. When I first started sharing my journey, I simply wanted a space to document my successes (and my spectacular failures!). But it has blossomed into so much more than that.
The community of women gardeners I’ve connected with — both locally at the allotments and globally through the podcast — is truly inspiring. Whether you are managing a sprawling rural plot, a tidy urban courtyard, or just trying to keep a few tomato plants alive on a sunny windowsill, there is a shared resilience among us.
What’s in the Diary This Season?
Navigating allotment life as a lady gardener means juggling the heavy lifting with the delicate work of seed sowing and nurturing. This month, my focus is entirely on preparation:
- Chitting the potatoes: Getting those early varieties lined up in egg cartons on the brightest windowsill I can find.
- Prepping the beds: Adding a generous layer of organic compost to the raised beds. It’s hard graft, but the soil health is the foundation of everything we do.
- Planning the cut flower patch: Because every woman gardening knows that feeding the soul with sweet peas and dahlias is just as important as feeding the family with courgettes and beans.
I am so excited to bring you along for the ride this year. From the podcast episodes where we chat with industry experts, to the regular updates right here in this digital gardening diary, we are going to grow some incredible things together.
